Echinacea, also known as Black Sampson, Purple Coneflower, Rudbeckia and Missouri snakeroot, was in use for centuries by American Indians as an herbal remedy for numerous ailments, more so than any other herb. By the 1920's, echinacea was widely used in America until the advent of synthetic drugs forced it into obscurity. There are three common species, echinacea purpurea, e. angustifolia and e. pallida. Numerous studies indicate that echinacea is a powerful immune system stimulator, with anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory activity. One of its active constituents is a glycoside called echinacoside. It seems echinacosides stimulate the activity of general immune system scavengers, which seek out and eliminate bacteria and cellular debris. A standardized echinacea extract should contain between 4.0% and 4.3% echinacosides, approximately. Echinacea is extracted through cold water/ethanol extraction (repercolation) with evaporation at low temperature, low pressure.
